Time to Be The Leader You Want (and Need) to Be

Time = one of the primary challenges that many leaders say impede their ability to show up as the kind of leader they want to be. The demands of the endlessly accelerating world of postsecondary administration create a scenario where leaders are focused on keeping their teams afloat. The concept of taking time to intrinsically inspire teams to perform seems idyllic and one that is left for the future when “time” becomes more forgiving. As we know, this moment rarely arrives. Becoming consumed by the constraints of time results in setting aside the kinds of leadership qualities that serve to create vision and inspiration, creating an imbalance between the kind of leader we show up as and the kind of leader we want (and need) to be. This interactive session will examine the issue of time and its relationship to mindfulness, vision, and leading in the present towards a visionary future. Andrea McDaniel, Brandon University

Motivating the Motivators: Facilitating Support Staff Contributions to Student Success

Positive interactions between students and college/university support staff and also between students and university processes (bureaucracy) are known to be positively correlated with student satisfaction and student success. This session will outline the potential impact of support staff members’ work and attitudes on the student experience. It will also explore ways in which all staff members can be encouraged to envision what could sometimes be perceived externally as “purely administrative” work through the lens of student success, where each task and each interaction (with both students and colleagues) contributes to students’ perceptions of and outcomes at the institution. Vanessa Wood, University of Calgary

ENGAGE DEVELOP ADVANCE: Creating and Implementation Service Principles in the Registrar's Office, a team approach

The Registrar's Office team identified the importance of service values for and how significant it is to the student experience at the University of Calgary. A service values working group was given the mandate to put forth recommendations of how the service values could guide the practice within the Office of the Registrar and potentially beyond to the campus community. An overview of the process will include the following; team engagement, defining service excellence, development of values and standards, recommendations, and implementation process.

Franz Gagl, Ricoh & Karen McCredie, Capilano University

Six Weeks to Six Days

Learn how to decrease process cycle times, lower costs and reduce dependency on paper. Three success stories are shared including student credit transfer automation; academic counselling and international student enrollment digitization and replacing legacy and home grown systems. Co-presented with Karen McCredie, registrar at Capilano University, Franz will share industry analysis and personal experience implementing enterprise content management in Canadian higher education.

Ian Grimes, Celcat

How Can the Timetable Benefit Your Students?

The first section will look at some of the issues students face with regard to their timetable from timing of activities to seeing their schedule and being notified of changes in a timely manner. The second half will look at ways timetabling software can help students get the most benefit from their timetable.
