Your Next Big Challenge? Preparing for the Role of the Registrar
Succession planning is a perennial challenge in registrarial organizations, particularly when it's time to fill the position of registrar. Despite the great talent and potential that we observe in registrar's offices, few candidates feel adequately prepared to take on the "big job". In this roundtable discussion, current registrars (who also serve on the Alberta Registrars' Association Executive) will share their own experiences and offer advice to those considering this rewarding career path.Thinking Through Learning Disabilities: Misconceptions, Reflections and Questions
What are learning disabilities? Are these legitimate reasons for accommodations, or an excuse used by students who really just need to try harder? Do accommodations compromise academic standards? Why does this matter anyway? Come join in the discussion as one of the recipients of the 2016 WARUCC Assistantship Award shares some of her learnings gained through LD Specialist certificate courses. You will be invited to reflect on and discuss your assumptions and experiences interacting with students with learning disabilities; current policies and services related to this demographic; challenges faced within your institution when trying to serve these students well; questions you may have; and ideas and/or action steps for how you can ensure that students with learning disabilities are appropriately served.Student Financial Well-being - helping students improve their fiscal health during post-secondary experience
Many Canadian post-secondary institutions, the University of Calgary included offer some form of financial literacy programming. The Financial Empowerment initiative received grant funding in 2015-2016 to begin addressing and combatting some of these issues by researching best practices in a campus financial literacy strategy, and design and implement a pilot of what some of these strategies might be. Research gave a clearer picture of the scope, vision and requirements that may need to be considered in year two of the initiative. This session will share the implementation of the of Financial Empowerment pilot program at the University of Calgary, lessons learned, and the importance of community partnerships that contributed to the success of the program and next steps for the program.
Awarding Transfer Credit for non-credit professional training
What are best practices and needed innovations for providing applicants with transfer credit for professional training that is not currently articulated because it operates outside the university credit structure? Examples are training offered by various bodies in insurance, banking, securities, HR, real estate, payroll, correction, avionics, medical services and Red Seal apprenticeships and various technologies. Come share your experiences and questions. Let’s enlarge the circle of conversation.
